In this section we discuss issues mainly pertaining to the wedding reception, and your choice
of entertainment. What's the difference between a wedding DJ, a mobile, and a club DJ?
What should you look for in hiring a DJ or DJ service for your wedding? We will answer these
questions and more. And if you have a specific question, just send me an email to
jeremy@arkansasweddingguide.info .
Many of us aren't really sure what questions to ask a DJ who we may be considering for our
wedding. The questions that get asked the most are "How much do you charge?", "What
kind of music do you have?", and "Do you make announcements?" These are important
questions to ask. But there are many more that we need to ask.
With the idea of creating the wedding experience of a lifetime, comes a responsibility to
consistently deliver world class entertainment season after season. The word "consistency"
represents a very important idea to consider, especially when your are choosing who to hire
for a once in a lifetime event such as a wedding. You want someone who ALWAYS shows
up, and ALWAYS does a great job.
We also strongly recommend to you make sure the DJ you are considering has his own
equipment. Oftentimes a DJ who mainly works in clubs or on the radio will not own his
equipment, and the entertainment for your wedding reception may hinge upon whether or
not he may be able to borrow the equipment at the last minute. Or at the last minute his
boss may tell him he has to work that night! The latter could be true of any DJ who is only a
DJ "on the side". Are you able to get in touch with him during regular business hours? If so,
that's usually a good sign.
You want to make sure that they are the type of DJ who brings back-up equipment just in
case something were to go out. Do they have a back-up system? This is one major thing
that separates hobbyists from professionals. In fact, the best DJs also have a back-up DJ
just in case they are sick. It's just one more small detail to consider that can really make a
huge difference in how things go on your wedding day.
Of course music is important. A "Wedding DJ" must have a well rounded play list that
includes traditional wedding ceremony songs, instrumental and light dinner music, lighter
Pop music, great dance songs (both new and old), country, and line dances. A "Wedding
DJ" will have something for everyone, for every generation, and the ability to blend those
songs in a way that keeps everyone happy. A DJ that works mainly on the radio or in clubs
would be unlikely to have that kind of variety. You also want to make sure the DJ you hire
has clean versions of all of the popular songs. This is another thing that may be hard to find
using a "Club DJ."
Dance lights or mood lights are options to consider as well. They can really be effective and
fun at wedding receptions. There are a couple of things to consider regarding lights. Do you
have enough space in the room? Also even if you have plenty of wide open space, you may
not want to make that space look so much like a concert that it conflicts with the ambiance of
the room and the decorations. We recommend "intelligent" lighting. The idea with
"intelligent" lighting is that one light on one stand can sit discreetly in the corner and create
the same effect as a whole roomful of "non-intelligent" lights. Amazingly, the price is about
the same!
That brings us to a point about modern equipment. We recommend using a DJ who
operates off of a laptop computer. Of course actually they should have two, in case one
malfunctions, and two hard drives full of the same music. It just makes for better service than
fumbling through CDs, when you can get your request played in a matter of seconds. Also if
there is a specific song requested that the DJ does not have, many times he can purchase it
on the spot online and be playing it within a minute or two. It's important that the rest of the
equipment be modern and of professional grade. Make sure and ask about wireless
microphones. They are useful for toasting.
Speaking of mics, make sure that whoever you choose to DJ your wedding reception is an
experienced announcer. Even if you don't want the DJ to make any announcements, the
reception will be much more successful if you have a DJ who knows how to interact with the
crowd. Attention to dress attire is equally as important. It's never good to be under dressed
or over dressed. What you want is a DJ who will dress up but not more so than the bride and
groom! If he fits in with the guests, they will have a better time.
All of the aspects we have mentioned thus far are of equal importance when hiring a DJ for
your wedding. The personality, attitude, and ethics of the DJ are the glue that holds all of
these other aspects together or allows them to fall apart. It's important that the DJ be one
that works with written contracts. Make sure also that you are not dealing with someone who
is argumentative or uses inappropriate language when speaking to you. Beyond that, make
sure your DJ is more interested in your needs than flaunting his own greatness. Look for
certain warning signs. Is there a high pressure sales pitch. If so, just say NO. Do they hit you
with a bunch of numbers and statistics? Do they brag about how many events they do or
how big their DJ company is? These are signs you may be dealing with "DJ Ego Maniac".
Not cool.
Do they use scare tactics? Do they say that they are the only ones licensed to play the
popular music? This is completely untrue. Yet there are DJ companies that will tell you that if
you use any other DJ, music licensing and royalty organizations such as BMI, ASCAP, and
SESAC can come in and shut your reception down. Again it's unfortunate that these DJ
companies feel the need to lie to you in order to get bookings. The truth is that DJs are not
required to have these licenses. The VENUES are the ones who have these licenses! So,
whoever plays music in that venue is covered by the venue.
Clearly there is much to consider when hiring a DJ for your wedding. We hope this article
helps you to make the right decision. This information only seems like common sense to
those of us who have been involved in weddings for quite some time. As such, we've heard
many horror stories about other "DJs". These are some of the most important events in
people’s lives. That deserves a certain amount of respect. That includes the way you speak,
dress, the music you play and so on. We are out to change the way people feel about hiring
a DJ. If you have questions, you can always email me jeremy@arkansasweddingguide.info.
